About this Consult:
Karen is experiencing stress urinary incontinence with soccer and running 9 months after her second birth vaginal birth.
She had a cervical tear with her first birth and significant episiotomy with vacuum with the second.
Karen goes through her history with long distance running and doing CrossFit throughout her pregnancy and resuming walk/jogs at 3 weeks post partum.
She didn’t have leaking at first after birth.
Karen noticed it coming on as she increased her speed in running, was pushing a stroller, and with kicking and change-of-pace movements in soccer.
She experienced a couple of episodes of heaviness and pelvic floor spasm.
She thinks she has a weak pelvic floor, lack of flexibility in the legs and is poorly aligned. Karen is concerned that these things could be contributing to her symptoms.
Karen is a health professional who owns two clinics and returned to work at 6 months post partum.
She wants to return to CrossFit but isn’t sure if this is a good idea with her symptoms and diastasis. She has been trying to manage her symptoms on her own so far.
Karen is worried about long-term implications of her symptoms and wonders if she has a prolapse, levator ani defect and might need a pessary?
How do birth trauma and stress affect Karen’s symptoms?
How did her beliefs and movement patterns come into play?
What can happen in one session that will alter Karen’s symptoms?
Will she be able to return to CrossFit? Will she still have symptoms?
How will Karen be fairing at 3 months, 1 year and 2 years later?
